Project Coordinator- Hesperian Health Guides
Paula Worby currently is a project coordinator at Hesperian Health Guides, a non-profit publisher that produces and shares easy-to-understand health information for people worldwide and in many languages. Prior to this, she worked 10 years in the Bay Area with day laborers and other Latin American immigrant workers and also completed graduate studies at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health.
Paula brings expertise on Guatemala to SJC from knowledge and experience built over three decades. She lived and worked in Guatemala from the 1980s through 2000 researching and supporting war-displaced persons. For nine of those years she was a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) staff member during the complex return process undertaken by thousands of refugees arriving to Guatemala’s indigenous highlands and northern lowlands. Paula was especially involved in conflict mediation in war-affected areas and researching land tenure issues, especially to reaffirm the land rights for rural women.
