Vanessa came to the United States at 16, leaving behind her parents and her sister to flee violence back in her home country. Back at home, she was never able to go to school because her parents needed her help in the fields, planting and harvesting coffee. She finally fled after being subjected to such unspeakable violence that she asked us not to reveal it publicly.
Now Vanessa is attending adult school to learn how to read and write. She cannot wait to become a U.S. citizen so she can bring her parents and sister to live in the United States with her.
