Deportation Defense

Representing families in removal proceedings with dedicated legal counsel.

SJC's Deportation Defense program provides full-scope legal representation to individuals and families facing removal proceedings in immigration court. We focus on providing holistic, trauma-informed legal services to immigrants seeking protection from violence and persecution from Mexico, Central America, and other countries around the world. This includes a significant Indigenous population, who make up one third of those we serve.

Removal Defense for Families, Individuals, and Children

SJC serves over 1,500 people each year. We provide full-scope removal representation including asylum and cancellation of removal in immigration court for families, individuals, and children, from the first hearing through final decision.

Representing Survivors of Violence

SJC honors survivors of violence with holistic, trauma-informed representation. We litigate Indigenous, gender-based, and LGBTQ+ asylum claims in immigration court and at the federal level, before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Fighting for Families

SJC focuses on providing holistic legal services to entire families, leveraging strategies to regularize the legal status of each family member to ensure families are not divided by borders.

Work Authorization

SJC advances clients' financial stability by obtaining work authorization. Hundreds of clients obtain work authorization each year, enabling them to support their families while their cases are pending.

Green Cards & Family Reunification

We move clients toward permanent legal status. Each year we represent about 100 people in securing permanent residency, and once asylum is granted, we petition to bring family members safely to the U.S.
